Who is God? …part 2 In the first half of Lesson #4, we learned that the Bible is only place to turn for the answer to this question. And in the second half of this lesson, we studied one of God's names from the Old Testament – El Qanna. Our God is a Jealous God. There are 5-Biblical references to El Quanna: Exodus 20:5, 34:14, Deuteronomy 4:24, 5:9 and 6:15. As opposed to the common definition of jealousy, Del described this jealousy as: Zeal, when sin threatens a covenant relationship. Salvation is a covenant relationship – accepting Christ as our savior and inviting him into our hearts, "…old things are passed away, and behold all things become new…" An eternal change happens as our names are written in the Book of Life. It's amazing, wonderful and comforting that God is jealous for relationship with ME! R.C. Scroll explains that the basis of Truth is grounded on two principals: 1. The Existence of God 2. The Trustworthiness of the Bible It's no surprise to see our enemy attack both of these foundational principals. Del talked about a couple of examples: Francois-Marie Arouet (who gave himself the pen name of VOLTAIRE), proclaimed that in 100-years, the Bible would be removed from everywhere except museums. Within 100-years, his home had been acquired and was being used for Bible translation, and distribution. In 1894 Robert G. Ingersoll, wrote a book called, "About the Holy Bible." I scanned excerpts this morning and in all of my years, I've never seen such a demonic attack on the Bible. In every way possible, he rails against it – I could literally feel the evil of it's origin and for this reason, I won't recite excerpts here. But one of Ingersoll's predictions was that because of his writings, in 15-years the Bible would be in the morgue. 15-years from his prediction, Mr. Ingersoll was in the morgue. In an event called, "The Jesus Seminar" Julius Wellhausen systematically attacks the authenticity of Jesus words in the Bible. He attempted to recalibrate what Jesus actually said with a new color scheme: - RED for the words Jesus actually spoke, - PINK for the works Jesus probably spoke, - GRAY for the words He did not say, but closely resembled His words, - BLACK for the words He did not say. You can guess his results – according to Wellhausen, 82% of the words attributed to Jesus were not actually spoken by Him. Ezekiel 22:26-28 describes those of his day who would call a lie, truth (and their motivation for doing so): 26 – Her priests do violence to my law and profane my holy things; they do not distinguish between the holy and the common; they teach that there is no difference between the unclean and the clean; and they shut their eyes to the keeping of my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them. 27 – Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey; they shed blood and kill people to make unjust gain. 28 – Her prophets whitewash these deeds for them by false visions and lying divinations. They say, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says'--when the LORD has not spoken. I've always been interested in the names the Bible uses to describe God. I found this list, which is not exhaustive, but I thought you might like to see it. By the way, the blue text below is a direct link to a more complete definition of each name. El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty) El Elyon (The Most High God) Adonai (Lord, Master) Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah) Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner) Jehovah-Raah (The Lord My Shepherd) Jehovah Rapha (The Lord That Heals) Jehovah Shammah (The Lord Is There) Jehovah Tsidkenu (The Lord Our Righteousness) Jehovah Mekoddishkem (The Lord Who Sanctifies You) El Olam (The Everlasting God) Elohim (God) Qanna (Jealous) Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide) Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace) Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts) Again, for more information on The Truth Project, you can log into, http://www.thetruthproject.org (or just click this link), register and have access to lesson outlines. Below is an open letter to Orange County carried in the Friday Orange County Register | | For three decades the people of Orange County have shown us far more grace and love than we could have ever imagined. Since we announced the beginning of Saddleback Church 30 years ago this week with a open letter, we wanted to write another open letter to express our deep gratitude to all of you. There is no other place on the planet quite like Orange County. Yes, we have amazing weather and unlimited opportunities to enjoy it, but the real treasure of our county is the people. You make Orange County special. We know this firsthand, from hundreds of thousands of one-on-one conversations with you over the years, sharing your good times and bad times, the births and deaths, the celebrations, and all the seasons and stages of life. We have seen the personal side of Orange County up close, and it is impressive. But we also want to thank those of you that we haven't met yet - you who make living in Orange County great because of your hard work, your community service, and your friendship as neighbors. We'd like to thank the Saddleback and Capo school districts for renting the church space for the 13 years we had no permanent building. We'd like to thank the Sheriff's departments and all the Fire departments we've partnered with during fires, floods, mud slides, earthquakes, and other disasters. It is a privilege to serve our county with such competent people. We'd like to thank all the other wonderful Orange County churches, and especially their pastors, who we've had the privilege of serving alongside. We have different labels and worship styles but we all serve the same risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. You are dear friends to us. I could die a fulfilled, happy man today, but I am more excited about the next 10 years, than the previous 30. During our Decade of Destiny, (2010-2019) we intend to mobilize our 4,000 small groups already meeting weekly across Southern California to launch a Saddleback church campus in every Orange County city. If you don't have a spiritual home, stop by a Saddleback congregation near you. We believe in Orange County and we believe in you. May God bless you greatly. Happy Easter! He is Risen! Rick & Kay Warren | | | Rick and Kay Warren, age 25, moved to Orange County from Texas in January 1980 to begin a new church. Arriving with a 4 month old baby late one Friday afternoon in a U-hall truck, they stopped at the first real estate office they found. Warren introduced himself to the only realtor in the office: "My name is Rick, I'm here to start a church, and I need a place to live … but I don't have any money!" Realtor Don Dale laughed and said, "Well, let's see what we can do." Within two hours, the Warrens had rented a condo with nothing down and getting the first month's rent free. Warren asked Dale if he attended any church He said "No," so Warren replied, "Great! You're my first member!" The two families began Saddleback church meeting in that condo. The small group quickly grew to 15 people. To announce the first public service on Easter, 1980, Warren wrote an open letter to the community. The letter announced, "A new church for people who've given up on church." The small group of fifteen hand addressed and hand stamped 15,000 invitations to Easter. Ten days later, 205 strangers showed up at the first service at Laguna Hills High School. A church was born. At the first service, Warren announced his 40 year commitment to leading the new congregation and laid out a vision for the future. it is the dream of a place where the hurting, the depressed, the frustrated and the confused can find love, acceptance, help, hope, forgiveness, guidance and encouragement. It is the dream of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with hundreds of thousands of residents in South Orange County. It is the dream of welcoming 20,000 members into the fellowship of God's family— loving, laughing, learning and living in harmony together. It is the dream of developing people to spiritual maturity through Bible studies, seminars, retreats, small groups, and a Bible school for our members. It is the dream of equipping every believer for a significant ministry by helping them discover the gifts and talents God gave them. It is the dream of sending out hundreds of career missionaries and church leaders all around the world, and empowering every member for their personal life mission in the world. It is the dream of sending out our members by the thousands on short-term mission projects to every continent. It is the dream of starting at least one new daughter church a year. I stand before you today and state in confident assurance that these dreams will become reality! Why? Because they are inspired by God. Over the next 15 years, the church kept outgrowing rented facilities, requiring that they use 67 different locations to accommodate the growth! Members joked, "This is the church you get to attend IF you can figure out where we are meeting this week!" The churched used four different high schools, numerous elementary schools, theaters, restaurants office buildings, recreation and community centers, parks, and stadiums, eventually holding four weekend services in a 2,300 seat high-tech tent. Saddleback is the only American church to grow to over 10,000 in attendance without owning a building. "We wanted to make the point that a church is people, not a building," explained Warren, "so we put off building until we had no other choice." Today, as Saddleback Church begins its Decade of Destiny, Saddleback holds weekend services in many cities, and over 4,000 small groups meet weekly in every city of Southern California. | | | | A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls. Proverbs 25:28 (NLT)
People with self-control master their moods. They do not let their moods master them. Most of what gets done in the world is accomplished by people who do the right thing even when they don't feel like it: "A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls." (Proverbs 25:28, NLT) People with self-control watch their words. They put their minds in gear before opening their mouths: "Be careful what you say and protect your life. A careless talker destroys himself." (Proverbs 13:3, TEV) People with self-control restrain their reactions. How much can you take before you lose your cool? "If you are sensible, you will control your temper. When someone wrongs you, it is a great virtue to ignore it." (Proverbs 19:11, TEV) People with self-control stick to their schedule. If you don't determine how you will spend your time, then others will decide for you: "Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil." (Ephesians 5:15-16, NIV) People with self-control manage their money. They learn to live on less than what they make and they invest the difference. The value of a budget is that it tells your money where you want it to go rather than wondering where it went! "In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has." (Proverbs 21:20, NIV) People with self-control maintain their health. That way they can accomplish more and enjoy their achievements: "Learn to appreciate and give dignity to your body ...." (1 Thessalonians 4:4, MSG) In what areas do you need to develop for self-control? The disciplines you establish today will determine your success tomorrow. But it takes more than just willpower for lasting self-control. It takes a power greater than yourself: "For the Spirit that God has given us does not make us timid; instead, his Spirit fills us with power, love, and self-control." (2 Timothy 1:7, TEV) |
